Many Danes experience one or more symptoms of Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD), sometimes called hypersexuality, hypersexuality disorder or sexual addiction. This disorder can include behaviours such as compulsive masturbation, cybersex addiction, erotomania, excessive sexual drive, problematic hyper-sexuality, sexual addiction, sexual compulsivity, and out of control sexual behaviour. Take this test called PATHOS, from the Greek word for “suffering”, and find out if you have symptoms of CSBD.

In the Danish population survey-project SEXUS from 2019, it was found that 3.1% of the Danish population had experienced being bothered by not being able to control their sexual activities within the last year.

CSBD is a sexual dysfunction in which sexual behaviors are not related to pleasure and often cause frustration or pain. Common symptoms of CSBD are:

  • Sexuality that causes significant concern and suffering.
  • Focus on sexuality which prevents initiating and establishing long-term relationships.
  • Recurrent and intense sexual fantasies, urges and behaviors that take up a lot of time and feel as if they’re beyond one’s control, characterised by unsuccessful attempts to reduce or control sexual fantasies, urges or behaviors.
  • Use compulsive sexual behavior as an escape from other problems, such as loneliness, depression, anxiety, or stress.
  • Continuous engagement in sexual behaviors that have serious consequences, such as the potential for getting or giving someone else a sexually transmitted infection, the loss of important relationships, trouble at work, financial strain, or legal problems.

If you experience one or more of these symptoms you may be suffering from CSBD. The good news is that there are effective options for treating CSBD. These include different medications and psychological therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) aimed at treating CSBD.

If you believe your sexual behaviors are problematic, please contact your general practitioner or find a psychologist specializing in sexuality and relationship issues at healper.dk.

About the test

This test is called PATHOS, from the Greek word for “suffering”. PATHOS is a brief sexual addiction screening questionnaire developed by Dr. Patrick Carnes. A 2012 study headed by Dr. Patrick Carnes estimated CSBD to afflict up to 3% to 6% of the population.

The aforementioned clinical study from Carnes et al. (2012) found PATHOS was clinically significant for effectively classifying patient’s appropriateness for entering treatment as potential sex addicts. It is also taken as a self-administered quiz to find whether your sexual desire is an addiction or not.

What is anxiety? Anxiety is a normal experience that is caused by your brain’s natural response to danger. It happens to everyone and can be triggered when we feel under pressure. For example, many people feel anxious before an important interview, first date, or speech.

In many ways anxiety is a useful experience that helps us to perform. But if you are feeling anxious all the time it can be very overwhelming and it might start to affect your relationships and day to day life. This is when anxiety stops being helpful and starts to become a disorder.
